Provincial Symbol

Granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1987, British Columbia's Coat of Arms features a crowned lion, the Royal Union Flag, a setting sun, a wapiti stag, and a bighorn sheep. The motto 'Splendor sine occasu' translates to 'Splendour without Diminishment.' The flag, adopted in 1960, duplicates the provincial shield design with the Royal Union Flag and a setting sun over the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific dogwood is the official floral emblem since 1956, while the Steller's jay was recognized as the official bird in 1987.
