The motto 'Splendor sine occasu' translates to 'Splendour without Diminishment.' The Pacific dogwood is the official floral emblem since 1956, while the Steller's jay was recognized as the official bird in 1987. The western red cedar became the official tree in 1988, and the Kermode bear, or 'spirit bear,' was designated the official mammal in 2006. The Pacific salmon became an official symbol in February 2013, and jade was named the official gemstone in 1968. The elasmosaur is the official fossil since October 26, 2023, and the tartan, adopted in 1974, features colors representing the ocean, dogwood, forests, maple leaf, and the crown and sun.

The interior regions, such as Kelowna and Kamloops, have a continental climate with colder winters and hotter summers compared to the coast. These areas experience lower precipitation, resulting in drier conditions. Northern areas, including Prince George and Fort St. John, experience a subarctic climate characterized by long, cold winters and short, warm summers.
