The Pitcher Plant, also known as Sarracenia purpurea, was designated as the official flower of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954. The Atlantic Puffin, scientifically named Fratercula arctica, became the official bird of the province in 1991. Approximately 95% of North America's Atlantic Puffins breed along the province's coasts, with the largest colony in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. The Black Spruce, or Picea mariana, was named the provincial tree in November 1993. This tree is the most abundant in Labrador and is featured on the Labrador flag. The provincial flag, adopted on June 6, 1980, features the primary colors of red, gold, and blue against a white background, symbolizing the province's heritage and future aspirations.
